Sociometry

Sociometry is a scientific method developed by Moreno which aims to analyse and describe the social relations in a group and furthermore in the society. By mapping the structure of inter-relations in the group it provides evidence for understanding the structure and the social dynamics in it.

Sociometry helps to:

- Explore ways in which people are related in social groups, communities and social networks.

- Describe the identity of the group dynamics by detecting the leaders, the sub-groups and the isolated members.

- Assist the group cohesion and problem solving in the group’s inter-relations.

The main tool of sociometry is the sociogram which is a visual representation of the connections among group members. Members may be asked to choose other members according to certain criteria as for example, whom would you choose to work with closely. Results are mapped in order to expose the social group dynamics.

Sociometry is widely used in organisational psychology and education.
